A LITTLE BIT OF BRAGGING

This year, there were 715 works of art (from 14 counties) entered in the Kalamazoo Institute of Art West Michigan Area Art Show. Two of them were mine (each artist is allowed to submit up to 2 pieces of art that must have been completed within the past 2 years). One of those was one of the 129 pieces accepted (a crown, as opposed to my self-portrait). This is the first year my work has been accepted and I'm very proud. This is the first show I've been juried into. Today, I finally went downtown and checked out the exhibit. You're not supposed to take photos in the museum, but the security guard let me take a photo of my work. If you happen to be near Kalamazoo (yeah, sure), the dates of the show are July 12 through August 23, and, it's free

STILL MORE ITALIAN PICS

You may notice a certain melancholy feeling to the pictures I've chosen to share in this posting. The sober faced door knocker, the mournful figure from MichelAngelo's DeMedici tomb, and the deteriorating Tuscan door all reflect my current mood. I'm wallowing in self-pity and feeling very tragic. I got some frustrating news today and am not taking it with even a grain of maturity or equanimity. I went to the hand surgeon this morning, expecting to get the two pins in my thumb removed, ready to start moving my thumb, eager to become two-handed. Alas (insert dramatic sigh here), only one pin was removed. It seems that the other pin has migrated towards parts it should have stayed away from and must be removed surgically so that it does not cause nerve damage. This is to be scheduled next Tuesday (OK, I'm reassured it's very minor surgery compared to what I had 10 weeks ago, but it's still surgery and I'm stamping my feet in frustration and making ugly faces at the prospect).

I still get to go to Art Unraveled. I still expect to get full use of my thumb back, just not as soon as I had hoped (I don't like delayed gratification; I think immediate gratification takes too long); and all this is really only an inconvenience. I know this, but that doesn't stop me from feeling very sorry for myself. Oh well, ignore my character flaws and self-indulgence and enjoy the photos.

MORE PHOTOS FROM ITALY

We left Monterossa al Mare (by train) for Genoa on Friday, basically to be by the Genoa airport, not to see the city (which is big and busy). The number of the train changed, but we managed to get on the right train and off at the right train station in Genoa. In Genoa, we walked around a little bit and had a very nice dinner in a delightful restaurant and then went back to the hotel and packed things up for the trip home.

Saturday, we took 3 flights (Genoa to Munich, Munich to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Detroit) to get home. The ride home was delayed by almost two hours due to a dead car battery, but we made it home after being awake for 25 hours. Back to real life (and a broken air conditioner during a heat wave) and time to get ready for Art Unraveled in Phoenix in August.

Anyway, here are a few more photos that I couldn't figure out how to put in my other two blog entries about my trip.

MORE ON MY ITALY TRIP

On Monday, the 14th, we took the Best of Tuscany Tour  and spent the day  seeing Sienna, a wine estate in the Chianti area just outside of San Gimignano, San Gimignano, and Pisa.

On Tuesday, we toured the Academia (again, no photos allowed), where we saw David and the Uffizi (yup, photos not allowed here, either), where the DeMedici's really put together some pretty good art collections. We also crossed the Arno on the Ponte Vecchio and then walked back to our hotel.
PonteVecchio
On Wednesday, we took two trains (more complex than I would have wished, but we made it) to Monterosso al Mare, one of the Cinque Terre. Our hotel was a 14th century villa, converted into a hotel, and we had a balcony with a great view.
VillaAccini
We took the ferry along the coastline to see the 5 towns from sea and we walked around and had dinner in Riomaggiore.

On Thursday, Becky spent most of the day on the beach and I checked out the easy part of the Cinque Terre Park walk along the Mediterranean and the 3 between Monterossa and Riomaggiore (Manarola, Corniglia, and Vernazza) and took a lot of photos.

CIAO, I'M HOME!

Italy was wonderful! We left just as we were beginning to long for home, but still wishing we could have stayed a little longer. I think this is good timing for tourists (and guests). And, After 12 days of constant companionship, Becky and I are still talking to one another (and, the talk is primarily courteous, I might add).

I took 2,039 photos. Hey, no one ever says, "darn, I took some extra photos, I wish I hadn't." I took the regular tourist photos and I also took an inordinate number (as Becky mentioned) of photos of Italian doors, windows, bicycles and textures (multimedia artist: have camera, will shoot).

We flew out of Detroit o Monday afternoon and arrive in Rome on Tuesday morning. After briefly losing our luggage at the Rome airport (the most helpful person didn't speak English, but with my attempts at Italian and a lot of hand gestures, we exchanged a lot of information), we went to our hotel, which was on the Via Venito (I really have to get hold of a copy of "La Dulce Vida"). We took a hop-on-hop-off bus tour of the city and then went back to the hotel for a nap, from which we woke the next day. On Wednesday, we had a tour of the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel (no photos allowed) and St Peter's. It was very hot and the Pope was out of town at the lake house). In the afternoon, we walked around our hotel's neighborhood, found an excellent outdoor Ristorante for lunch and then did some shopping (we read the tourist rulebook, we knew what our obligations were). We had a late two hour dinner at a Ristorante on the Via Venito and felt very Continental watching the people walk by.

Colosseum On Thursday, we had a bus tour of Pompei (yes, I took photos of the obscene frescos; no, I won't post them) and the Amalfi Coast. It was a long and delightful day, although pretty darn hot.

Of Friday, we had an unstructured day. We walked to the Trevi Fountain (yes, we threw in coins) and then walked to (and up and down) the Spanish Steps.  We sat along the fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps and dunked our feet like all the other hot tourists (this was the only fountain where they seemed to allow this; although, at the other fountains you would see people dipping in hats, shirts and scarfs to cool off). We walked back to the hotel (walking a lot helps offset all pasta and gelato we consumed).

On Saturday, we took the train to Florence. After checking into our hotel, we walked to the Duomo Square, where we found the paper store in which I spent many Euros. We also walked around and found a  nice place to eat.
FirenzeInBackground On Sunday, we had our tour of wine country. The tour we originally booked got cancelled, and we ended up with a private tour. It was wonderful. We stopped at the Benadictine Monostary where we saw some absolutely beautiful frescoes (I think from the 1300s) and had a taste of the monks' wine (pretty good stuff). Then we went to Montalcino, Pienza and  Montepulciano. We tasted wine, we shopped, we ate and we saw beautiful countryside.

ARRIVEDERCI

I'm going to Italy with my older daughter to celebrate her 21st birthday (yes, my younger daughter is already thinking bout her 21st birthday trip in twoyears) and we will be back on July 19. For my 21st birthday, my parents took me to Frank's Italian Restaurant in Hartford, Connecticut. My husband, who does not particularly like to travel, will be monitoring us long distance (I rented a European cell phone for the trip so we can stay in touch). We're primarily going to Rome, Florence and Monterossa al Mare, but we'll be taking day trips to Pompei, Pisa, Sienna and the Tuscan countryside. Have fun while I'm gone :D

SUMMER BLESSINGS

With strange weather all across the country (OK, Nature, we get; we're not in charge), it's nice to know that there are occasional delightful summer evenings to be enjoyed. Last week I saw my first fireflies (they've probably been out longer than that, as I'm a very unobservant naturalist). Between our midwest storms, we've enjoyed some beautiful bits of summer weather. I decided to make a digital collage in appreciation of beautiful summer evenings.

DICTIONARY PAGES

I'm participating in a dictionary and trying to get everything done before I leave for 12 days...So, I got confused and couldn't remember what letters I had (too dumb to look in the database until I finished my pages); so, I made 5 pages. Anyway, I sent off the pages today and am now posting them: the image on the left is the front of the page, the one on the left is the back. I hope you enjoy my made up words and am assuming it's OK to have some extra words for some of the letters. Meanwhile, I'm starting to try to organize for leaving for Italy next Monday.
