CAPETOWN WATERFRONT

Yesterday we had a city tour of Capetown and then walked around the waterfront on our own. I can't overstate how courteous and charming everyone is.

A PAUSE IN CHRISTMAS PREPARATIONS

Right after Christmas, my younger daughter and I are leaving for a ten day trip to South Africa. So, yesterday, instead of decking halls or shopping for a Christmas feast, I decided to make myself a trip purse (yes, I seem to make a purse for each big trip I take; it's the only way I can get all the pouches and zippered pockets I want in the sizes I want). I bought the fabric a couple of years ago on a trip to Phoenix and have wanted to do something travel themed with it for a while.

I really like the look of the blue trim on this house near Taos, New Mexico.

FOR THE BIRDS

I made some bird ornaments for some recent swaps. Inspired by an ornament I saw recently, I decided to make a sparkly, feathery winter bird. I used styrofoam balls, styrofoam glue, gesso, glitter, a white feather boa, pins, and a pearl and bead garland to make my birds. I'm rather pleased with how thy turned out.

 

GETTING A JUMP ON THE NEW YEAR

My local art group, The Altered Sisters, makes a calendar every year. We each take a month (or two, if we need extras) and make 12 copies of the 8 1/2 x 11 inch pages. Then, we get together and assemble the calendar. It's something we look forward to each year. This year, I will be absent from the January meeting, so I brought my pages to the December meeting. I have May and August.

For my May page, I used a photo of my flowering cherry tree; a background I made of writing and color splotches; and a scan of tea and coffee stained tags. I put these all together in Photoshop and added text and numbers in Photoshop.

For August, I used watercolors.  I decided to go with bright yellows, reds and oranges. My background is a sheet of watercolr paper painted mostly in yellow. I covered another sheet with reds, oranges, pinks and yellows and then cut it up into rectangles. I glued the rectangles to the yellow sheet and scanned it. Then, I added text and numbers in Photoshop.
