This week's inchie theme is "fishy." I immediately thought of something from years ago (I think it originally came from something George Bernard Shaw wrote while pleading the case for Esperanto). I love the English language and I love playing with words, but English has serious flaws in logical spelling. So...ghoti spells fish! the gh in laugh produces the sound of "f." The o in women produces the sound of "i." The ti in nation produces the sound of "sh." ghoti=fish.
Just wonderful!

Only you and a wonderful priest who tried to teach me Esperanto would think of this for the fish inchie. You are one smart and talented cookie.

Joanne, I remember that from a linguistics class I took eons ago. I had to go back to an old e-mail address I had for some business stuff and found your comment buried there. I'll have to make sure I change all of those things! Anyway we didn't live in Charlottesville at the same time, we arrived in 1987. I agree it is one of the most beautiful places. We now live in Stevens Point, WI.
